Methods and Ethics
This work is based off extensive qualitative research, primarily consisting of desk research, literature reviews, and eight in-depth interviews with LGBTQI+ and intersex activists in Ukraine and Poland. Specifically, interview participants included activists from Ukrainian human rights organizations; Polish activists and community workers; and international experts in LGBTQI+ migration.

The semi-structured interviews lasted between 1-1.5 hours and focused on topics such as experiences accessing humanitarian aid, knowledge of policies regarding LGBTQI+ persons, potential issues with existing policies, and types of assistance provided or not provided to LGBTQI+ persons. The interviews were conducted via Zoom and all but one were recorded with permission, transcribed, and analyzed by a team of researchers. Some interview quotes were lightly edited for clarity.

The entire research team completed trainings and received certifications from the CITI Program in research ethics, compliance, and the safety of participants. Throughout the project, we were committed to ethical conduct, including principles of voluntary participation, informed consent, transparency, and maintaining confidentiality.
The project was approved by the William & Mary Institutional Review Board (IRB).
